Washington, DC, August 29th, 2023: The University Startups Transitioning to High School course at Eastern Senior High School equips students with essential time management and organizational skills, fostering success, not only in high school but also in their future endeavors. Through this program, students have the opportunity to explore their career choices early on, leading to better college and career fit.
As a result, students feel on average 50% more prepared for high school and 75% of students feel confident about staying organized.
Joe Weedon, Assistant Director P-12 Communications of the Education Trust in DC, emphasizes the importance of this course in preparing students for success. Weedon says the course enables students to think differently and advocate for themselves with the ultimate goal of facing the challenges of high school. “Having a program like University Startups will help the kids start earlier thinking about their career choices and find the better fit for them—both college and career—so that they're successful,” affirms Weedon.
This foundational course caters to rising 9th graders. It equips them with an extensive range of soft skills that are vital for college and career readiness. Additionally, students gain a clear understanding of their executive function and self-reflection skills, which will help to identify their strengths and weaknesses. 100% of students discovered new time management tools and learned how to effectively communicate with teachers.
The curriculum covers diverse subjects including writing letters to their future selves, daily routines, and creating to-do lists. Furthermore, students receive guidance in navigating Canvas, a skill that eases their transition into high school.
