Supporting Students in Community College

Community colleges serve a diverse set of dedicated learners, from students right out of high school to those returning to college while working full-time. Some individuals attending are also parents, and others may be undocumented immigrants in the United States. Each group has distinctive needs, and community colleges and University Startups are uniquely poised to assist all of their students in working towards degrees, certifications, and economic mobility.

As an adjunct professor at one of the largest community colleges in the country, I have been part of the mobilization to keep students enrolled, acted as an advocate to retain necessary funding and tools from textbooks to laptops, and witnessed the personal growth and success of students. Being both a professor of English and an academic embedded coach has been a transformative experience.

Students’ needs are vast and varied, requiring support inside the classroom and beyond. And sometimes, they still need more. University Startups provides the bandwidth and expertise to address their needs regardless of their chosen path.

Understanding why community college students have chosen their particular path is vital to the necessary support systems. University Startups is able to meet the needs of students where they are, providing yet another bridge to success. Offering services on mobile devices allow students to work around their family and work obligations, a must if students are to succeed. Sharing a variety of techniques for time management and study skills ensures each student will find the “tricks” that work for them. Life skills such as resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, how to search for jobs and internships, etc., are not always taught in the classroom. University Startups provides the missing link.

Community colleges are a hub of academic achievement and growth. Supporting students as they work towards their goals takes an open mind, an agile way of thinking, and resources they can easily and frequently access.
