Expanding Opportunities for Entrepreneurs: University Startups Partners with the Universities at Shady Grove to Grow its Equity Incubator

University Startups (USU) announced today the expansion of the Equity Incubator program hosted by the Universities at Shady Grove. The groups of aspiring women and minority entrepreneurs have learned how to take their business idea from concept to launch in the 8-week program, one of the biggest inclusive incubators on the East Coast.

“I started my business, Principally Yours, just 2 weeks before the class started. The amount of knowledge I have gained about starting my own business in this short amount of time just amazes me,” says Gay Melnick.

Through the University Startups programs, students will be taught how to develop their business ideas utilizing an entrepreneurial mindset, record their progress through video pitches and connect with customers to adapt their original ideas and form them into products ready for the market.

COME TO THE PITCH COMPETITION- DEC. 8th

The Final Pitch Competition will be on December 8th from 6-7:30pm at the Universities at Shady Grove. Five teams have been selected to pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges. The top five teams selected include business ideas like the Nanobio Fab- a nanotech-based healthcare company which would make wearable smart devices for detecting infections and enabling treatment. Another new idea from the incubator is WISE Cities - a platform that uses tools to connect older adults to community resources utilizing senior centers and government resources. There is also the Koho App- this app takes the users taste palette into account and provides personalized, ethnic recipes from over 50 cultures. The idea with the Koho App is that it makes cooking fun and personalized. The top teams will present their ideas for a variety of awards in the form of cash prizes.
