University Startups is partnering with Eastern Senior High School to provide its students with courses in social entrepreneurship, key organizational skills, and all aspects of college preparation. The introduction of this unique hybrid learning program will help prepare the students for each stage of their educational journey.
“Eastern High School is a great place for this program. There are a large number of students enrolled in specific IB courses, but few graduate with an IB diploma. I believe this University Startups program can change that,” says Joe Weedon, a former representative on the District of Columbia State Board of Education and parent of an Eastern High School student. “The partnership with University Startups is a great step in preparing the students for the IB diploma as well ensuring the students receive the support needed for the college selection process.”
In the coming year, roughly 25 Eastern High School freshmen will participate in the University Startups’ program focusing on community involvement, self-advocacy and organizational skills. A group of sophomores will take a Social Entrepreneurship Course where they will come up with a business model that solves a problem the students have identified. The course teaches key skills, such as, critical thinking, collaboration and problem solving. Up to 100 upperclassmen will also have the chance to participate in programs from college essay writing to applying to college.
The online University Startups classes are taught by professors from top-tier business schools and encourage Eastern Senior High School students to think creatively and find ways to translate their passions into real-world experiences.
